Kalgoorlie Miner, 27th November 1895 - “The terrible accident which befell Mr. G. M’L. Matheson, caused a wave of regret to pass over the town on Tuesday morning. He was sleeping on the balcony of the Royal Hotel, in Collgardie, on Monday night, and at about 3 o’clock next morning, woke up and climbed over the guard rail, while half asleep, and fell to the footpath below. In falling, he struck a rail which guards the excavations for a new building alongside the hotel, and then rolled to the ground. His injuries are chiefly internal, and it is feared they will prove fatal. It is supposed he woke in the night and mistaking the rail of the balcony for a fence, climbed over the obstacle with the terrible result mentioned. At a late hour last night Mr. Matheson was much worse, and was spitting blood, An operation intended for the patient’s relief had not been performed, his condition preventing this being done. Little hope was entertained for his recovery when the wire left Coolgardie.”
Coolgardie Miner, 28th November 1895 - “We regret sincerely to have to record the death of Mr. George M’Leod Matheson, who succumbed yesterday afternoon to the terrible injuries he received through falling over the balcony at Edwards’ Royal Hotel early on Tuesday morning. From the first it was recognised that Mr. Matheson’s injuries were of such a nature as to give little hope of his recovery, but it was thought possible that his naturally strong constitution might help to pull him through and there was no serious internal rupture, Drs. M’Neill, Ellis, and Davey were in attendance, and it was ascertained on examination that the internal injuries were so severe that no possible hopes could be held out. Mr. Matheson bore up with great fortitude, and on Tuesday evening made his will, and arranged a number of other matters of business. He gradually became weaker, however, and expired, as stated yesterday afternoon. The deceased gentleman was generally respected and esteemed by all with whom he came in contact, and the sad news of his death was received with genuine sorrow. Mr. Matheson had intended to go to Albany to meet his wife, who is now on her way thither, and with her to take a trip to England. For Mrs. Matheson the greatest and sincerest sympathy will be felt in her sad bereavement. Since coming over to Western Australia the deceased gentleman had been very fortunate in his undertakings, and he leaves his widow and family exceptionally well provided for. “The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o’clock, when the remains of the deceased gentleman will be interred in the Coolgardie Cemetery.”
“(From our Hannan’s Correspondent)
“A telegram was received yesterday morning which spread a gloom over the town. It was to the effect that Mr. G. McL. Matheson, one of the most prominent figures in the social and political life of Hannan’s, had met with a serious accident in Coolgardie, by falling over the balcony of the Royal Hotel. His partner, Mr. Turnbull, and his clerk, Mr. McEvoy, at once left for Coolgardie to see the injured man. Later in the day information was received that an operation was to be performed at 2 p.m. and in the evening rumour had it that Mr. Matheson was fatally injured, and the operation was not performed, and the worst was feared as the sufferer was a man of at least 16 stone weight. Mr. Matheson was formerly well-known as a member of the Sydney Stock Exchange, and at one time occupied a seat in the New South Wales Parliament. He had been in Hannan’s about six months and was associated with Mr. Turnbull in mining business in which he had been most successful. Here he proved himself to be prgressive and consequently to a certain extent aggressive, but he had the interests of the place at heart and feared not to speak his mind in plain language. He was withal one of the most kindly-disposed men on this field, and whilst he had political enemies he had a multitude of private friends who thoroughly appreciated the genuiuness [sic] of his disposition. There is scarcely a man on the East Coolgardie Goldfields who knew Mr. Matheson who will not be sincerely grieved at the accident he has met with.”
CM, 29th November 1895 - “The funeral of the late Mr. George McL. Matheson took place yesterday aftrenoon, the remains being interred in the Coolgardie Cemetery. An immense number of friends testified the esteem in which the deceased was held, by attending to pay the last tribute of respect to his memory, the cortege being a very lengthy one. Amongst those present were the Mayor and Councillors of Kalgoorlie, and many other prominent gentlemen from that town, the Mayor and Councillors, and Town Clerk of Coolgardie, Mr. Moran, the member for the district, and others. As the procession proceeded along Bayley-street, the various business places were closed out of respect, and the flag at the Council Chamber was also flown half-mast during the day. At the cemetery the last sad rites were conducted by the Rev. J. Millar Smith, the local Presbyterian minister.”
KM, 29th November 1895 - “The funeral of the late Mr. George M’Leod Matheson took place at the Coolgardie cemetery at 3 o’clock yesterday aftrenoon. An enormous crowd of Coolgardie friends attended to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased gentleman and among those who represented Kalgoorlie were the Mayor (Mr. John Wilson), Mr. Lloyd (brother-in-law of the deceased), and Messrs. M.H. Jephson, R.L. Hair, T. Hair, P. Jodrell, G.C. Hamilton, H.R. davies, A. Turnbull, and W.J. M’Ivor. The funeral cortege left Mrs. Tuhurnell’s hospital at 3 o’clock, over 100 carriages joining in the procession. As Bayley street was passed through, a large crowd lined the footpaths, and many followed the carriages to the cemetery, on raeching which a vast concourse of friends assembled round the grave, among them being the late Mayor of Coolgardie (Mr. J.R. Shaw), the present Mayor (Mr. McDonald), and many of the councillors and leading citizens. The funeral service was conducted by the Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Mr. Burns. The coffin was decorated with beautiful wreaths sent by sympathising friends. The chief mourners included the following: - Messrs. Lloyd, (brother-in-law), R.L. Hair, A. Turnbull, M.H. Jephson, and W.R. Knight. The following were pall-bearers : - Messrs. Jephson, Turnbull, T. Hair, and R.L. Hair. Great sympathy has been shown throughout both at Kalgoorlie adn Coolgardie.”
KM, 3rd December 1895 - “A a meeting of the Kalgoorlie Stock Exchange was held at the Exchange rooms on Monday evening, to take into consideration the drafting of a letter of condolence to the widow and family of the late Chairman, Mr. G. Turnbull, R.L. Hair, and the Secretary, was appointed to draw it up. Several members spoke of the valuable services the late Mr. Matheson had rendered to the Exchange, and to the town, and the loss his untimely death had been to the district. It was also decided to send the many telegrams and letters of sympathy received by the Exchange to Mrs. Matheson.”

ST, 14th December 1895 - “Referring to the death of Mr. G. M’Leod Matheson, formerly a member of the firm of Strath [?], Clive, and Matheson, sharebrokers, Sydney, the Western Argus (Kalgoorlie, West Australia), says : - ‘Mr. Matheson has been in Coolgardie since Sunday with several others, and was sleeping on the balcony. His companions do not give a clear account of how the accident occurred, but the night porter, while engaged in waking up the passengers by the coach to Boorabbin, observed him put one leg over the balcony rail, and slide over. Mr. Matheson fell on to the sidewalk, and in falling struck the railing erected over the footpath fronting a building in the course of erection on the site of Brewer’s Hotel. He lingered until Wednesday. from the first he knew that death was inevitable, and, like a baave [sic] man, spent the last few hours at his disposal in squaring up his affairs, making his will, and arranging for the coming of death. He knew his time was come, and, standing face to face with the grim destroyer, he made the best possible arrangements for his wife and family, and squared up as far as possible his partnership accounts. He was in his prime, being only 43 years of age, and naturally looked forward to many years of hapiness, when death cut short his career. He leaves a wife and one daughter, who reside in New South Wales, but he died with the knowledge that those dependent on him are left well provided for.”
ST, 17th January 1896 - The late Mr. Alexander Matheson [sic] made his rise and financial fall on the White Rock Mine, Drake, N.S.W.
