KELLER, George

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 12th February 1896 - George Keller, miner, gives evidence at the Golden Quarry Mine injunction hearing: “.....he pegged out a quartz claim on the 31st instant. He saw hardy pegging. The trenches had not been touched for weeks. He was certain it was the Golden Quarry.....I don’t think Peak finished pegging before Hardy and I did.”

 

KELLER, Henry

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 3rd October 1894 - A benefit concert, in aid of Mrs. T. Jones, is given by the Yalwal Negro Minstrels: A. Martin, H. Kellar [sic] and G. Clarke perform Ballads.

ST, 4th November 1896 - Henry Keller and Thomas Linkenbagh come to blows at Yalwal and are both fined 5s and 4s, respectively, plus costs.

1883 - 1884 Church of England - S. Kells, of Yalwal, contributes 4s 6d to the Nowra Church Fund.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 31st October 1888 - Thomas Mooney’s unsuccessful application for a Publican’s License at Yalwal: Solomon Kells, miner at Yalwal, gives evidence. Had been working at Yalwal, on and off, for the last eight years, and had counted 76 males residents over 16 years of age recently and presented the Court with two petitions against the application. One petition was signed by male residents the other female residents. He had once belonged to the Good Templars.

ST, 17th July 1889 - Solomon Kells gives evidence opposing A. Linkenbagh’s application for a Publican’s License at Yalwal. :inkenbagh’s application was granted.

ST, 8th January 1890 - In a letter thanking all of those who had made donations to the Yalwal School of Arts Building Fund, S. Kells signs as Honorary Treasurer.

1883 - 1884 Church of England - Thomas Kells, of Yalwal, contributes 3s to the Nowra Church Fund.

1888 - 1889 Electoral Roll - No. 881. Thomas Kells, freehold at Tomerong, residence Yalwal.

ST, 20th March 1889 - Pinnacle Mine Case: Henry Ison, Thomas Heron, John Minnikin, Matthew Herle, James Adams, Isaac Samuel M’Mahon, Henry Smith, Thomas Kells, William Markham and Frederick Wilson are charged with unlawfully obstructing Reynolds from entering the Pinnacle Mine. The Bench decide that it is a matter fro the Warden and dismiss the case.

ST, 27th March 1889 - The Supreme Court calls on the Nowra Bench to show cause why a writ of mandamus should not be issued compelling them to hear the case.

ST, 10th April 1889 - Application for a writ of mandamus refused.

ST, 1st May 1889 - Supreme Court ex parte Reynolds, the Pinnacle Mine Case. It is decided that this is a matter for the Warden.

ST, 14th August 1889 - In a letter to the Editor, Joseph Linfoot sincerely thanks Thomas Kells and William Johnson for saving his daughter from drowning in Dangera Creek.

ST, 8th January 1890 - T. Kells donates 3s 6d to the Yalwal School of Arts Building Fund.

ST, 23rd July 1890 - Thomas Kells’ declaration of compliance with the conditions of his c.p. of 120 acres.

1891 Census - Thomas Kells is listed in the Census at Householders Schedule No. 127. Uninhabited taken elsewhere. (SRNSW Reel 2523)

ST, 22nd May 1891 - A committee, consisting of Messrs. Heron, Warren, Kells, Matson and Minikin, organise a ball in the newly completed Yalwal School of Arts which is attended by about 30 couples.

28th June 1891 - A daughter, Ethel May, is born to Thomas and Charlotte Kells. Thomas is listed as a Miner at Yalwal.

23rd July 1891 - Ethel May Kells is Baptised by Joseph Best.

ST, 1st February 1896 - The Eclipse Mine is let on tribute to Messrs. C. and W. Davidge, R. Stonehouse, J. Crucickshank, A. Peters and Thomas Kells, from N. Basser.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 4th July 1888- Paull v. Maclean: In evidence, James Paull states that Adolphus Kelly, of Victoria, and James Irwin, late of Copeland, have an interest with him in the case.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 24th May 1883 - The Pinnacle Mine has changed hands again and is now in the possession of James Kelly and Co., who were recently contractors in the mine.

ST, 23rd August 1883 - Kelly and party are installing new savings and appliances at the mine.

ST, 4th October 1883 - Messrs. Kelly and party have had the main shaft in their engine snap.

ST, 18th October 1883 - Kelly & Co., the proprietors of the Pinnacle Mine, have put a new main shaft in their engine.

18th March 1884 - Lease Register: No. 92 GL 1. Sole applicant is Stephen Kelly. (SRNSW Reel 1538)

ST, 10th April 1884 - Notice to S. Kelly advising him to execute and take delivery of a gold-mining lease, within 30 days.

ST, 17th April 1884 - The Engine shed, at Mr. Kelly’s Pinnacle Mine, is broken into and 80 lb. of mercury, valued at approx. L160, is stolen.

ST, 10th July 1884 - G. Thomson v. Stephen Kelly: Claim on the trustees of the assigned estate of Kelly’s brother for work and labour, L4 9s 3d. done on the Pinnacle Mine.

ST, 16th October 1884 - Mr. Kelly, the plucky proprietor of the Pinnacle Mine.

ST, 5th December 1887 - William Kelly advises the Warden’s Court that Mr. Heron is unable to attend because of a bad arm.

ST, 28th December 1887 - Galbraith v. Heron: Heron deposed that W. Kelly had deposited Pinnacle Mine gold in the bank. He was employed by Mr. Kelly but he understood that he was not the owner of the mine. Heron is related to Mr. Kelly.

ST, 30th May 1888 - Paull v. Maclean: Thomas Heron, in evidence, refers to Mr. Kelly in Sydney, who is an uncertificated insolvent.

ST, 20th March 1889 - The Pinnacle Mine Case: Stephen Kelly was issued the lease on the 22nd May 1883. It was transferred to Cope and King on the 17th August 1885. A relative, one William Kelly, worked on the mine for some time and then went to Sydney. Before going he got his brother-in-law, Thomas Heron, to manage the mine.

ST, 26th February 1890 - William Kelly and Mr. Ray originally took up the Golden Crown Mine. Kelly objected to Captain Reynolds lease of the claim. The Minister decides in Reynolds’ favour.

ST, 1st April 1891 - An advertisement calling for tenders to drive a tunnel in Bulloch’s 10 acre lease, advises that further particulars may be obtained from J.G. Kelly, of Yalwal.

Shoalhaven News, 20th March 1875 - James Westman, Charles Kelsey and John Sivewright place an advertisement cautioning against the public purchasing any interest in the Yalwal Quatrz Mining Company.

SN, 4th April 1875 - An advertisement is placed cautioning would be investors from purchasing any interest in the Yalwal Quartz Mining Company, other than from the present proprietors: Messrs. D. and E. Fletcher, Kelsey, Westman, Curtis and Sivewright.

SN, 6th November 1875 - A meeting of the shareholders of the Yalwal Quartz Crushing Company is to be held at Kelsey’s ‘White Horse Hotel,’ George St., Sydney.

SN, 19th February 1876 - Messrs. Byrnes, Waugh, Curtis, Kelsey and Scholer have been appointed provisional directors of the Yalwal Qaurtz Mining Company.

SN, 27th January 1877 - Mr. Kelsey, director, speaks at a meeting of the Yalwal Quartz Mining Company.

SN, 31st March 1877 - Mr. Kelsey, hotelkeeper of the White Horse in Sydney, recently elected director of the Yalwal Quartz Mining Company.

26th September 1878 - Memorandum of Association of the Yalwall Quartz Mining Company Ltd. :

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 12th August 1880 - Messrs. Curtis, Kelsey and Webber, of Sydney, are determined to spare no expense at the Yalwal Quartz Mining Company.

Shoalhaven News, 3rd May 1873 - Mr. William Kennedy speaks at the Public Meeting convened to have a road to Yalwal constructed. He moves an amendment. J. Kennedy and William Kennedy are appointed to the Road Committee.

SN, 26th July 1873 - Mr. James Kennedy attends a shareholders meeting.

28th May 1878 - Lease Register: No. 32 GL 15. William and James Kennedy are two of the original applicants. (SRNSW Reel 1538)

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 21st October 1880 - W. Kennedy reports on the Star Tunnel.

ST, 30th December 1880 - Mr. William Kennedy lodged a ckae of retort gold, weighing 61 oz., at the E.S. and A.C. Bank, Nowra, on behalf of the Eclipse Mine.

ST, 17th March 1881 - Messrs. Kennedy move a motion at a shareholders meeting of the Star Gold Mining Company. James Kennedy speaks at the meeting.

ST, 31st March 1881 - Messrs. W. and James Kennedy, along with members of the committee of the Star Company, visit Yalwal.

ST, 9th June 1881 - Mr. Kennedy inspects the completion of Galbraith’s tunneling contract at the Star Mine.

ST, 28th March 1888 - Cricket Match: Mechanics Cricket Club v. Yalwal, which Mechanics win by 91 runs. S. Kennedy, 0 and 0 runs, 1 catch.

ST, 30th May 1888 - Paull v. Maclean: James Kennedy gives evidence - “I am manager of the Eclipse Gold-Mining battery at Yalwal, and reside at Yalwal; I am part owner in three batteries, viz., part owner of the 5-head batter (M’Arthur’s), part owner of the Water-wheel battery, and part owner of the Eclipse battery; during January last I became part owner of the battery known as M’Arthur’s battery, since then I have done two or three small crushings, I have done so simply to oblige parties, the battery is not a public battery, it was bought for the Pioneer Claim; arrangements are now being made to remove it;.....The Water-wheel and the Eclipse batteries are employed in connection with their own workings;.....”

ST, 22nd May 1889 - J. Kennedy is mentioned as having made an application for land to be dedicated for the Yalwal School of Arts.

ST, 7th January 1891 - Tenders are called to cart 1000 tons of quartz from the Pioneer Mine to Kennedy’s battery.

ST, 22nd April 1891 - Mr. James Kennedy, of Yalwal, contributes L1 to the Kiama Hospital Fund.

ST, 29th April 1891 - Messrs. Kennedy and Monaghan, Battery Owners, Contribute L6 to the construction of a Public Road between Upper and Lower Yalwal.

SN, 23rd May 1891 - T. Kennedy, of Yalwal, is the candidate for the Kiama Electorate, for the labour interests.

ST, 19th August 1891 - Sydney Kennedy v. James Irwin, snr. : Wages of L22 10s for 9 weeks work at L2 10s per week on the Dangera Treasure Mine. Verdict for amount with 39s expenses and L2 2s professional costs.

ST, 27th June 1894 - Advertisement: Mr. William Kennedy will address the electors on Thursday 5th of July at 8 p.m. at Yalwal.

ST, 8th July 1894 - James Kennedy speaks out at Maclean’s political meeting in the Yalwal School of Arts. William Kennedy polls 38 votes to Maclean’s 31, at Yalwal.

ST, 24th October 1894 - Robert Kennedy, of Yalwal, is charged with using obscene language at the Bridge Hotel, in Nowra. He was drinking with Charles James. The case is proved and he is fined 5s plus 4s 10d in costs.

SN, 9th March 1895 - William Kennedy and James Monaghan are granted 4 month’s suspension, i.e. 2 men, on No. 95 GL 2, the Eclipse Mine.

SN, 13th July 1895 - Mr. T.C. Kennedy addresses an enthusiastic political meeting at Yalwal on Thursday night. The meeting was chaired by Mr. H. Johnston.

SN, 27th July 1895 - Kennedy polls 30 votes at Yalwal.

ST, 1st February 1896 - James Kennedy and A. Linkenbagh originally took up the Golden Quarry mine as a three acre lease.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 11th September 1879 - C.E. King, late of Barrington Gold-fields, in a claim jumping case of the Pinnacle Mine.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 8th January 1890 - Dr. King, of Nowra, donates 5s to the Yalwal School of Arts Building Fund.

 

KING, Francis William

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 28th December 1887 - Galbraith v. Heron: Heron states that Cope and King are the owners of the Pinnacle Mine.

ST, 13th March 1889 - Cope and King forfeit the Pinnacle Mine and Captain Reynolds tries to take possession on behalf of Mr. M’Culloch, a Sydney Solicitor.

ST, 20th March 1889 - Pinnacle Mine Case: Cope and King still hold the lease and M’Culloch was acting under their instructions. The case is dismissed as being a matter for the Mining Warden.

ST, 16th April 1890 - The Mortgagee Sale of the Pinnacle Mine is advertised by Richardson and Wrench. Further particulars may be obtained from Messrs. Cope and King, Pitt St., Sydney.

ST, 9th July 1890 - The mortgagees of the Pinnacle Mine, No. 92 GL 1, are asked to show cause why the lease should not be cancelled. James Monaghan complains that the labour conditions of the lease are not being met. Mr. Kinf has recently purchased the mine at Auction. The case is adjourned.

ST, 29th April 1891 - F.W. King, owner of the Pinnacle Mine, contributed L2 10s to the Public Road between Upper and Lower Yalwal.

ST, 21st December 1892 - Thomas Gilbert sued Messrs. F.W. King, J. Irwin and W. Davis for wages. King had let the Pinnacle Mine to Irwin and Davis and had Thomas on the ground to look after his interests. The case against King is dismissed and a verdict against Irwin and Davis is given.

Shoalhaven News, 23rd March 1895 - Francis W. King v. Alexander M’Leod Matheson: For L77 15s 9d rent due on the Pinnacle Mine. Mr. F.A. Franklin of Wollongong was arbiter and the award was in favour of King. “Mr. F.W. King has again taken up the Pinnacle mine at Yalwal.”

28th February 1895 - Lease Register: No. 597 GL 51 parish of Ettrema. F.W. King of 2 O’Connell St. Sydney, is the sole applicant. (SRNSW Reel 1539)

SN, 30th March 1895 - King is granted 3 month’s suspension on the Pinnacle Mine.

ST, 7th July 1897 - King’s agent, Stenhouse, is granted three month’s suspension on the Pinnacle Mine.

ST, 27th October 1897 - F.W. King v. A. Hay to prevent the registration of a machine area on the grounds that King had already purchased it from the Basser Estate. Postponed until the 10th of November at Yalwal.

ST, 1st December 1897 - Warden’s Court held at Yalwal: King v. Hay is struck out due to the non appearance of King’s solicitor.

ST, 22nd January 1898 - King v. Hay: King is granted a rule nisi.

ST, 9th February 1898 - King’s application for four month’s suspension of labour conditions on the Pinnacle Mine is refused.

ST, 6th August 1898 - Report on the hearing in Banco Court No. 2.

ST, 25th January 1899 - King v. Hay and Wright v. Sherlock are being heard regarding the ownership of the Eclipse Mine machinery site.

SN, 28th January 1899 - The above cases were heard from Saturday morning to Wednesday afternoon without a decision being reached.

KIRKMAN, J.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 3rd October 1894 - A benefit concert, in aid of Mrs. T. Jones, is given by the Yalwal Negro Minstrels. Mr. J. Kirkman acts as the accompanist.

ST, 12th December 1894 - Kirkman and party are getting small quantities of gold in Sawpit Gully. Kirkman and party had their claim jumped by Constable on the grounds of having no miner’s right. They are awaiting the Warden to settle the dispute.

ST, 13 October 1897 - J.W. Gannon v. J. Kirkman: garnishee order on R.T. Thorburn. Mr. Thorburn said there was not L7 5s 6d due to Kirkman. He simply went out in place of his father for eight days work. Witness believed that the father was entitled to the money. Mr. Nisbett: “I don’t believe it, I think the son was entitled to the money. Mr. Thorburn: “We would not have employed the son at all.” Plaintiff produced a letter from defendant in which he threatened to become insolvent. As it would not be known how much was coming until the end of the month, the case was adjourned for one month.

ST, 3rd December 1898 - N. Bassar v. J. Kirkman, jnr. : James Paull had obtained a deed of assignment and authority from the trustees to sue in Basser’s name for book debts at his Yalwal Store.

ST, 25th April 1888 - Cricket Match: Mechanics Cricket Club v. Yalwal in which only one innings is played and Yalwal win. H. Knight, 1 run.
