Shoalhaven Telegraph, 22nd May 1879 - The Rev. J. Hargrave recently visited Yalwal and held a service for some 40 people at Mrs. Galbraith’s.

ST, 25th May 1879 - Mrs. Galbraith provides lodgings and also bakes for the miners at Yalwal.

ST, 24th July 1879 - Letter to the Editor from Thomas B. Galbraith regarding scurrilous reports circulating about him in Yalwal. The letter is dated 22nd July 1879.

6th March 1880 - A son, Joseph, is born to Thomas and Caroline Galbraith. Thomas is listed as a Miner at Yalwal.

16th June 1880 - Joseph Galbraith is Baptised by J. Hargrave.

ST, 10th May 1883 - Thomas Galbraith sues John Sivewright for 12 weeks and 2 days wages.

ST, 31st May 1883 - Thomas Galbraith advertises “Galbraith’s Accomodation House” at Yalwal for sale.

17th August 1883 - Letter regarding a reduction in school fees from Thomas Galbraith. States that four of his own children and an adopted niece and nephew by the name of Coote attend the School. (SRNSW 5/18232.1)

ST, 11th October 1883 - Thomas Galbraith advertises his intention to apply for a Publican’s License for his house at Yalwal.

Diary of Bernard Brown, Nowra, 6th October 1883 - “.....Tom Galbraith here with a Petition to Sign to get Local Pub License for his house at the Yalwall diggings which is much required.....” (Shoalhaven Museum S 2035)

ST, 1st November 1883 - Thomas Galbraith, of Yalwal, is granted a slaughtering license.

1884 NSW Department of Mines Annual Report - “.....the claim was registered for want of capital, and the principal [Galbraith] shortly after accepted an offer to take the management of a mine in India.”

ST, 29th May 1884 - T. Galbraith’s application for a suspension of labour conditions on his claim at the Junction of the Shoalhaven and Kangaroo rivers is granted.

ST, 25th June 1885 - The Post Office, with two mails per week, is in the charge of Mrs. Galbraith.

ST, 4th May 1887 - James M’Arthur sues Thomas Galbraith for L13 4s 5d worth of goods sold & delivered. Galbraith ordered to pay L2 per month.

ST, 20th July 1887 - An advertisement is placed by Thomas heron expressing his sincere thanks to all those who participated in the attempted rescue of Alfred Underwood at the Pinnacle Mine. Thomas Galbraith is given special mention.

ST, 14th September 1887 - Thomas Galbraith, manager of the Pinnacle Mine, is defended in a letter to the Editor, by James Freed, in respect to the accident involving George Matthews at the mine.

ST, 23rd November 1887 - Cricket Match: The first cricket match is played in Yalwal and causes great interest. Dinner is taken at host Galbraith’s with turkey, fowls, roast beef, vegetables and plum pudding served.

ST, 5th December 1887 - Galbraith v. Heron for L62 6s 8d in wages due. Heron has a bad arm and is unable to attend the Court, according to W. Kelly, and the Warden postpones the case.

ST, 28th December 1887 - Galbraith v. Heron for L62 6s 8d being: L55 6s 8d wages and L7 horse hire when managing the Pinnacle Mine. Awarded the sum plus L3 3s in costs.

ST, 18th January 1888 - Galbraith v. Heron: L47 13s 6d for goods sold and delivered. Heron admits the debt. Verdict for amount and costs.

ST, 18th January 1888 - Galbraith v. Broers: L6 14s 10d for goods sold and delivered. To be paid back at 3s per week.

ST, 18th January 1888 - Galbraith v. J. Minnikin: L9 0s 7d for goods sold and delivered. Awarded L7 and half the costs of one witness.

ST, 18th January 1888 - Thomas Galbraith v. Nowra Municipal Council: Damages of L20. The case is non-suited, defendant allowed the costs of three witnesses.

ST, 8th May 1889 - Land has been dedicated for a School of Arts at Yalwal. It is situated to the south of Mrs. Galbraith’s Boarding House.

ST, 27th November 1889 - Advertisement for the Auction Sale of Thomas Galbraith’s property at Yalwal, portion 60, unless a writ of fieri facias be previously satisfied. This refers to the Supreme Court Case of Lambert v. Galbraith.

ST, 8th January 1890 - Mrs. C. Galbraith donates 5s to the Yalwal School of Arts Building Fund.

1891 Census - Mrs. Galbraith is listed in the Census at Householders Schedule No. 102. * males and 6 females resident. (SRNSW Reel 2523)

ST, 22nd April 1891 - Miss Galbraith, in white satin with green ribbons, attended a ball in the new School of Arts at Yalwal.

ST, 7th March 1894 - Mrs. Galbraith: Postmistress.

ST, 12th February 1896 - William James Fimister, in evidence at the Golden Quarry Mine injunction hearing, stated: “We then roused Mrs. Galbraith up and asked her if it was necessary to post a notice, and she said it would do by and by. One was posted at 6.30 a.m.”

June - July 1896 - J. Galbraith and Mrs. Galbraith made purchases from Yalwal General Store. (Shoalhaven Museum Yalwal General Store Ledger S 1251)

16th December 1899 - Johnson’s report on the Yalwal School of Arts lists J. Galbraith as a paid up member. (SRNSW 20/13079)

15th July 1914 - Caroline Galbraith died, aged 66. She is buried at Yalwal Cemetery.

Shoalhaven News, 24th June 1893 - William Galloway gives evidence at the Homeward Bound Mine hearing. He is an employee of Mason’s.

24th August 1893 - William Galloway, Age 26 born in Ireland, Miner of Yalwal, married Mary Williams, age 22 born Shoalhaven, of Yalwal in St. John’s Church, Nowra. The ceremony was witnessed by Alfred Williams and Anne Linfoot & performed by Ernest Wooten.

June - July 1896 - W. Galloway made purchases from Yalwal General Store. (Shoalhaven Museum Yalwal General Store Ledger S 1251)

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 21st July 1897 - William Galloway, miner, gives evidence at the Joseph Morgan hearing; cruelty to a horse.

ST, 3rd December 1898 - N. Bassar v. W. Galloway. James Paul had obtained a deed of assignment and authority from the trustees of the Basser Estate to sue for book debts which he had previously purchased.

ST, 23rd July 1890 - Robertson, Clarke and Gayer sue W.E. Barry for the return of 15,000 shares in the Homeward Bound Mine. His wife, Charlotte, had contributed his share of the L19,000 purchase price of the mine.

Shoalhaven News, 6th May 1893 - “Mr. J. Gearin, a practical miner of large experience, lately came down from Armidale and inspected the fields, and he thinks a lot of Yalwal. It is likely that he will join one of the companies shortly.”

 

GILBERT, Charles

1891 Census - C. Gilbert is listed in the Census at Householders Schedule No. 53. 5 males and 2 females residing. (SRNSW Reel 2523)

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 22nd July 1891 - Mr. C. Gilbert performed the Sailor’s Hornpipe as well as an Irish song & dance at a concert held in the School of Arts in aid of a distressed family.

GILBERT, Thomas

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 14th December 1892 - Thomas Gilbert sued Messrs. F.W. King, J. Irwin and W. Davis for wages. It was shown that King had let the Pinnacle Mine to Irwin and Davis. The case against King is dismissed and a verdict is given against Irwin and Davis.

GLANVILLE, George

26th December 1898 - George Glanville, divorced, aged 48 farmer of Yalwal, married Amy Fielding Garrad, born Yorkshire aged 23 of Nowra, at St. John’s Church, Nowra. The cermony was witnessed by Seward Elliott and H. Weigand and performed by H.M. Trickett.

 

GOODHEW

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 12th February 1890 - Constable Goodhew and his horse are swept hundreds of yards downstream whilst attempting to cross the Danjera Creek in flood. Both escape unharmed.

ST, 22nd July 1891 - Messrs. Lawrence and F. Goodhew perform comic songs at the Yalwal School of Arts in aid of a distressed family.

GOODMAN, Robert

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 24th March 1897 - Robert Goodman v. Alex Hielman for L4 15s being the balance due on supply of wood to the Homeward Bound Mine. Goodman withdrew the case after being promised a cheque for L4 15s less L1 5s, the amount that he had been overpaid on a previous delivery.

 

GOODWIN, James

27th August 1895 - James Goodwin. aged 32 a carpenter from Yalwal, married Ada Ann Rogers, aged 25 a widow born at Willaroo Lake George but now resident at Yalwal. Her parent were William Davis and Martha Holmes. The couple were married at St. John’s Nowra and the ceremony was performed by Edward Wooten and Witenessed by Walter Kohler.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 30th January 1897 - James Goodwin is charged with cutting timber on Crown Land, near Yalwal, without a license on the 18th. He went and saw Mr. Hielman [possibly to get money] and got a license the same day. fined 10s and costs.

21st November 1897 - A son, George Loftus is born to James and Ada Goodwin. James is listed as a Miner at Yalwal.

ST, 1st December 1897 - James Goodwin, labourer residing at Yalwal, gives evidence at the Coroner’s Inquiry into the death of Mrs. Clauss.

10th February 1898 - George Loftus Goodwin is Baptised by H.M. Trickett.

5th July 1898 - A daughter, Pearl Margaret, is born to James and Ada Goodwin. Although James’ abode is given as Yalwal he is listed as a miner at Grassy Gully.

3rd August 1899 - A son, James Dennis, is born to James and Ada Goodwin. James is listed as a Miner at Yalwal.

15th Janaury 1900 - Pearl Margaret Goodwin is Baptised by H.M. Trickett.

October 1901 - A son, Vincent John, is born to James and Ada Goodwin. James is listed as a Miner at Yalwal.

16th November 1902 - James Dennis Goodwin and Vincent John Goodwin are Baptised by W. Newby-Fraser.

 

GOULDING, Thomas

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 12th March 1890 - Thomas Goulding, charged with using obscene language, did not appear in Court. A warrant is issued for his arrest. He is also charged with assaulting John Vidler, at Nowra, but Vidler declined to proceed any further with the matter.

ST, 6th August 1890 - Thomas Goulding is arrested in Junction St., Nowra, under the influence and convicted of the obscene language charge.

Shoalhaven News, 17th March 1877 - Deeds of Grant are now ready for delivery, at land Titles Office Sydney, for William Grady, of Yalwal.

SN, 30th November 1872 - The reefs at Yalwal are deserted with the exception of Griffiths and party.

SN, 15th February 1873 - Notice regarding Registered Leases: Griffiths Prospecting Area and Griffiths and party 5 acres.

SN, 7th June 1873 Griffiths expects to strike the reef any day now.

SN, 16th August 1873 - Notice Regarding Registered Leases: William Griffiths and two others, 5 acres, quartz.

SN, 23rd August 1873 - Griffiths and Co.’s Claim at Yalwal is the only one really doing anything.

SN, 22nd May 1875 - Mr. Griffiths has forwarded a considerable portion of the battery, manufactured by him at Terrara, to Yalwal for the Pioneer Co. The remainder will be shortly ready.

SN, 7th August 1875 - A pair of sawyers are wanted to cut 5,000 feet of hardwood, apply to W. Griffiths, Yalwal, or John M’Arthur, Terrara.

ST, 25th May 1882 - Griffiths and party have raised a large quantity of stone from the Poor Man’s Friend Mine.

ST, 31st July 1889 - Warden’s Court: Griffiths v. A.H. M’Culloch for work and labour done. Verdict for Griffiths L3 plus 26s costs.

SN, 18th July 1891 - William Griffiths Obituary: “For a time he devoted some attention to prospecting what is now a thriving goldfield at Yalwal, being one of the first on the field.”
