Shoalhaven Telegraph, 23rd September 1891 - John Kavanagh [sic], of Yalwal, summoned Robert Middleton to recover L1 for a goat he is alleged to have shot. As there is no evidence as to who killed the goat he is non-suited. Middleton was awarded 30s. in costs and Cavanagh, on hearing this, “became weak and almost fell to the ground and had to be assisted out of court.”

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 13th May 1880 - Mr. Clarkson is the successful tender for the tunnelling at the Homeward Bound Mine. In an advertisement George Clarkson, of Nowra, requires the services of four good miners.

16th June 1880 - Letter requesting a school for Yalwal signed by George Clarkson indicating that he has at least one eligible child. The letter is also signed by David Clarkson. (SRNSW 5/18232.1)

ST, 22nd July 1880 - George Clarkson v. James Rodgers: partners in the contract for the Homeward Bound Tunnel.

ST, 9th September 1880 - Patterson v. Clarkson for goods sold and delivered.

Shoalhaven News, 6th May 1893 - “Licenses for the keeping and sale of explosives for the year ending 30th Sept., 1893,.....F. Cohen, Yalwal.”

ST, 5th August 1896 - Frederick Cohen, of Yalwal, has been appointed as Deputy Registrar in the same district.

ST, 12th October 1898 - Yesterday Coach licenses were granted to Abraham Martin and Frederick Cohen.

COLLESS

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 12th February 1890 - Joseph Colless and an assistant from the Railway Stores, Nowra, are swept downstream whilst attempting to cross Dangera Creek in a flood. Their van and two horses are also swept away; there is no loss of life but the van is badly damaged.

ST, 16th April 1890 - An advertisement for Joseph Colless’ Railway Stores at Nowra and Yalwal.

ST, 18th June 1890 - J. Colless contributes 5s to Samuel Fisher during his illness.

ST, 8th October 1890 - J. Colles advertises the closure of his Railway Stores at Nowra, but states that his Yalwal Store will carry on as usual, but on a much larger scale.

ST, 14th January 1891 - Frederick M. Watts advertises that he has purchased the stock in the assigned estate of J. Colless. He intends to continue the store store at Yalwal.

ST. 21st January 1891 - William Moore, of Yalwal, has been appointed to collect any money owing to Joseph Colless’ Estate.

ST, 29th April 1891 - J. Colless, storekeeper, contibuted L2 10s to the the construction of the public road linking Upper and Lower Yalwal.

10th December 1890, Diary of James Thomson - “Went to Yalwal, promised Collier one year of Toorooroo if he fences, to commence 1st Jany. 1891.”

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 16th September 1891 - Thomas Collier, of Yalwal, is sued by Thomas Bent for L4 being the balance of payment for a dray sold and delivered to him. Decree for amount with costs.

ST, 1st February 1896 - The Golden Quarry Mine is tributed by H. Martin, John Constable & C. James.

ST, 5th February 1896 - Messrs. Alexander Hay, John Wright, Martin and Basser pegged out for a quartz claim, the Golden Quarry, through their agent A. Hielman, on Wednesday last at 5 p.m. Peter and Duncan Maclean are granted an injunction against Alexander Hielman, John Constable, Charles James, William Thomas, Mison, J. Hardy and party, Boyd and party, Alexander Hay, J. Wright, A. Martin, H. Martin and N. Basser in relation to the Golden Quarry.

ST, 12th February 1896 - Duncan and Peter Maclean are granted a 7 day injunction against John R. Hardy, James McKeachie, Charles Stuart, Alfred Hartley, Alfred Boyd, Charles McKeachie, Frank Sparrow, Alex. hielman, James Constable, William Thomas, Charles Jones, Joseph Linfoot, Isaac Mison, Alex Hay, John Wright, Abraham Martin, henry Martin and Nathan Basser in relation to the Golden Quarry. In evidence Hardy states that James, Thomas and Constable were working the claim when he took possession.

ST, 27th April 1891 - Miss Coote, in peacock blue and white lace, attends a grand ball held on Easter Monday Night.

ST, 16th January 1896 - At Nowra Police Court, D. Coots [sic] and 11 others were charged with riotous behaviour in a public place at Yalwal on New Years Eve. The summons was faulty and the case dismissed.

16th December 1899 - Report, by L. Johnson Teacher, on Yalwal School of Arts lists David Cootes as a committeeman. SRNSW 20/13079)

3rd October 1900 - Lease Register: No. 100 GL 20, R. Fletcher and D. Cootes agreement to work on tribute. (SRNSW Reel 1538)

COPE

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 28th December 1887 - Galbraith v. Heron. Heron states that Cope and King are the owners of the Pinnacle Mine.

ST, 13th March 1889 - Cope and King forfeit the Pinnacle Mine. Capt. Reynolds tries to take possession on behalf of Mr. M’Culloch, a Sydney solicitor.

ST, 20th March 1889 - Pinnacle Case: Cope and King still hold the lease and M’Culloch was acting on their instructions. Case dismissed as a matter for the Mining Warden.

ST, 16th April 1890 - The Mortgagee Sale of the Pinnacle Mine is advertised by Richardson and Wrench. Further particulars may be obtained from Messrs. Cope and King, Pitt Street, sydney.

ST, 9th July 1890 - The Motgagees of Gold Lease No. 92 Portion 1, the Pinnacle Mine, are asked to show cause why the lease should not be cancelled. James Monaghan complains that the labour conditions are not being met. Mr. King has recently purchased the mine at Auction. The case is dismissed.

1891 - 1892 Electoral Roll - No. 446. Thomas Cumming, residence Yalwal.

ST, 22nd July 1893 - T. Cummings v. W.E. Barry for wages. The case is dismissed because of no evidence.

 

CURTIS

Shoalhaven News, 3rd April 1875 - A Solicitor’s advertisement is placed cautioning would be investors, in the Yalwal Quartz Mining Co., from purchasing any interest other than from the present proprietors: Messrs. D. and E. Fletcher, Kelsey, Westman, Curtis and Sivewright.

27th May 1875 - A child, unamed No. 252, is Baptised by R. Earl. Father’s, surname Curtis only given, is listed as Digger of Yalwall Creek.

21st July 1875 - Lease Register: No. 7 GL 29, Edward Curtis and James A. Curtis are two of the original applicants. (SRNSW Reel 1538)

SN, 19th February 1876 - Messrs. Byrnes, Waugh, Curtis, Kelsey and Scholer have been appointed provisional directors of the Yalwal Quartz Mining Company.

SN, 31st March 1877 - The Pinnacle Mine was first discovered by Messrs. Schafer, Sivewright and Curtis and was the first claim taken up at Yalwal. They made an agreement with Lampson to divide the claim into 24,000 shares. 12,000 to be fully paid up shares to be held by the original owners and 12,000 (paid up to 10s.) to be held by Lampson.
