BAINBRIDGE

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 26th October 1887 - Burrier v. Yalwal Cricket Match. Bainbridge scored 1 & 10 runs, took 2 wickets and 1 catch. Burrier won the match.

ST, 28th November 1887 - Burrier v. Yalwal Cricket Match. This is the first cricket match played in Yalwal & created much interest. R. Bainbridge scores 7 & 2 runs, and yakes 3 wickets. Burrier wins by 17 runs.

ST, 28th December 1887 - Gailbraith v. Heron: Galbraith deposes that he cashed a cheque for Bainbridge, which was in Owen’s name. The cheque was for work done on the Pinnacle Mine.

BAIRD, Harold and R.W.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 27th May 1896 - Harold & R.W. Baird, of Yalwal, joined Shoalhaven last week. Harold is of Pirates fame and is said to be a beautiful drop kick.

ST, 6th June 1896 - “.....Messrs. H. and W. Baird are footballers that are known everywhere, and noted for the courteous treatment of their opponents.”

ST, 29th July 1896 - “.....What a lesson Harold Baird teaches every Saturday afternoon to those who play the game.....”

ST, 26th August 1896 - At a match played in Nowra last Saturday Yalwal, 12, defeated the Warriors, 5. “They ought to induce the Bairds to remain with them a while longer.”

ST, 2nd September 1896 - The Shoalhaven Seniors, numbering 14, met a combined Junior team (from the Yalwal, Boolong, Shoalhaven & Berry ‘B’ teams) and won by 12 to 5. H. Baird was one of the few Shoalhaven players reported to be in form.

ST, 12th September 1896 - H. Baird selected to play for Shoalhaven.

ST, 19th September 1896 - Berry beat Shoalhaven 17 - 0 to win the Premiership. H. Baird played well amongst the backs.

ST, 23rd September 1896 - “.....The best footballer during the season was unquestionably Harold Baird, who was unanimously chosen to captain the Coast in Sydney, and was also chosen to captain the combined against the metropolitan juniors. facts in themselves which place the question beyond dispute.”

ST, 8th May 1897 - “The total amount paid as expenses to Messrs. H. and W. Baird was L11, being at the rate of 10/- each for each match they came from Yalwal to play.....”

ST, 3rd July 1897 - The best 15 in N.S.W. will play the New Zealand team at the Sydney Cricket Ground. W. Baird, who played with Shoalhaven last year, will play against the visitors.

ST, 23rd July 1913 - Football: “Coming to the time of Snowy Baird and his brother Wally must be about the time the Warriors came into being.....Snowy Baird, and his goal potting from among a ruck, made him the direct cause of several wins for Nowra, and the idol of the onlookers. His brother Wally was a fine forward. I fancy the late Bill Link [Linkenbagh] had much to do with securing these players for Nowra. They were employed at Yalwal at the time.”

ST, 23rd November 1887 - Cricket Match: Burrier v. Yalwal. This was the first Cricket Match played at Yalwal and caused great interest. The Barron’s play for Burrier, W. Barron 3 & 0 runs, J. Barron 1 & 0 runs.. Burrier won by 17 runs.

BARRY, William

30th August 1889 - Lease Register: No. 215, GL 14, The Homeward Bound Mine is transferred to Robertson, Clarke, Gayer and Barry. (SRNSW Reel 1538)

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 2nd October 1889 - In an advertisement regarding the registration of the Homeward Bound Gold-Mining Company, No-Liability a list of shareholders is given: William A.E. Barry, Melbourne, Mining Expert, 500 shares.

ST, 23rd July 1890 - W.E. Barry is sued by Robertson, Clarke and Gayer for the return of 15,000 shares in the Homeward Bound Mine. He was an uncertificated insolvent at the time of purchase.

27th January 1891 - Lease Register: No. 215, GL 14, The Homeward Bound Mine is transferred to the Homeward Bound Gold Mining Company No-Liability. (SRNSW Reel 1538)

1891 - 1892 Electoral Roll - William Barry (non-resident), leasehold, residence Melbourne.

Shoalhaven News, 24th June 1893 - Homeward Bound dispute: William A. Barry deposes that he pegged out the lease for Booker and party.

SN, 22nd July 1893 - Court Cases: T. Jones, W. Emery and T. Cummins V. W.E. Barry for wages. Dismissed due to no evidence. R. Holmes and W. Davis v. W.E. Barry for wages. Struck out as they did not hold miner’s rights during the time they worked.

SN, 26th August 1893 - W.E. Barry applies to be registered as the proprietor of the Pioneer Mine’s machinery site. It is objected to on several points by John Maclean. The decision is reserved.

SN, 7th October 1893 - Robert Taylor Thorburn appeals against the Warden’s decision to register Barry as the holder of the Pioneer Mine’s machinery site. The appeal is upheld.

ST, 8th August 1896 - W.E. Barry, G.E. Barry and W.H. Barry in Homeward Bound case.

ST, 4th November 1896 - As above.

 

BASSER, Nathan

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 1st February 1896 - Anticipating that there may be a weakness in the lease, Mr. Basser re-pegged the Golden Quarry last Monday. The claim was jumped at 3.10 a.m. yesterday. Basser has let the Eclipse Mine on tribute to C. & W. Davidge, R. Stonehouse, J. Cruickshank, A. Peters and Thomas Kells.

ST, 5th February 1896 - Messrs. Alexander Hay, John Wright, Martin and Basser pegged out for a quartz claim, the Golden Quarry, through their agent A. Hielman, on Wednesday last at 5 p.m. Peter and Duncan Maclean are granted an injunction against Alexander Hielman, John Constable, Charles James, William Thomas, Mison, J. Hardy and party, Boyd and party, Alexander Hay, J. Wright, A. Martin, H. Martin and N. Basser in relation to the Golden Quarry.

ST, 12th February 1896 - Duncan and Peter Maclean are granted a 7 day injunction against John R. Hardy, James McKeachie, Charles Stuart, Alfred Hartley, Alfred Boyd, Charles McKeachie, Frank Sparrow, Alex. hielman, James Constable, William Thomas, Charles Jones, Joseph Linfoot, Isaac Mison, Alex Hay, John Wright, Abraham Martin, henry Martin and Nathan Basser in relation to the Golden Quarry.

ST, 29th February 1896 - The Golden Quarry case is heard.

ST, 22nd April 1896 - N. Basser v. W. Smallman, L26 7s 6d for goods sold and delivered. A. Hielman, representing Basser, proved the debt.

ST, 24th March 1897 - Basser mentioned in Goodman v. Hielman.

ST, 5th May 1897 - “Mr. N. Basser, of Yalwal and Pambula, is selling his estate.”

ST, 19th May 1897 - An advertisement for the assigned estate of Nathan Basser, Yalwal, A. Hielman late manager, calls for accounts to be settled before the 31st.

ST, 2nd June 1897 - James Paull advertises that he has purchased the book debts in the estate of Nathan Bassar [sic]

ST, 30th June 1897 - Paull tries to sue James Constable for the recovery of a book debt owing to Basser, but is unsuccessful

ST, 11th September 1897 - Basser is mentioned in Walford v. Hay a case for the recovery of L25 in connection with the sale of the Albion Mine.

ST, 27th October 1897 - GL 95 is mentioned as being part of the Basser estate in a case before the Warden’s Court. It has been purchased by Robert Imray. Also F.W. King v. A. Hay: to prevent the registration of a machine area on the grounds that King had purchased the site from Basser’s estate.

ST. 30th October 1897 - It is stated at Alex Hielman’s bankruptcy hearing that Basser is his brother in law. Hielman borrowed heavily from Basser and by November 1893 he was his principal creditor.

ST, 3rd December 1898 - James Paull obtains a deed of assignment and authority from the trustees to sue in Basser’s name for the recovery of book debts. “Alexander Heilman [sic], of Yalwal, said he was manager for Mr. Bassar [sic] when he kept the store at Yalwal. When the estate was assigned he told the trustees that the accounts were so complicated as to be practically unrecoverable, and he declined to give 3d in the pound for the book debts.”

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 12 January 1887 - Mr. Hugh Bates has been placed in charge of the school at Yalwal after the retirement of James Booth.

ST, 12th September 1888 - Mr. Bates, of Yalwal, has forwarded a Henry Kendall poem for publication: “The Curse of the Mother Flood.”

Shoalhaven News, 11th July 1891 - Mr. H.J. Bates and others are advised that their request for a Police Station at Yalwal has been denied, but will be kept for future consideration.

ST, 11th November 1891 - An application for the i.p. of 1 acre, Parish Ettrema, by Hugh James Bates is adjourned.

18th December 1891 - H.J. Bates, Vice President of Yalwal School of Arts. In a letter to the Accountant at the Dept. of Public Instruction Bates request that the reply be addressed to him at Pyree, Shoalhaven. (SRNSW 20/13079 No. 66021)

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 16th September 1891 - Thomas Bent sued Thomas Collier, of Yalwal, for L4, the balance on a dray sold & delivered. Decree for amount with costs.

 

BETTENS, William

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 27th April 1892 - Messrs. John Irwin, Charles Payne and W, Battin [sic] provide catering for the grand ball held on Easter Monday night.

1891 - 1892 Electoral Roll - No. 146. William Bettens, residence Yalwal.

Shoalhaven News, 24th June 1893 - William Batten [sic], fireman at the Homeward Bound Company’s Battery, gives evidence at the dispute hearing.

ST, 3rd October 1894 - A benefit concert in aid of Mrs. T. Jones is given by the Yalwal Negro Minstrels. James kennedy, Bettons [sic] and Gray perform ‘gags and comicalities.’

ST, 16th January 1896 - At Nowra Police Court, W. Bettens and 11 others are charged with riotous behaviour in a public place at Yalwal on New Years Eve. The summons is found to be faulty and the case is dismissed.

Shoalhaven News, 10th August 1872 - Messrs. Biddulph, Thorburn, Fletcher and Hughs take up five acres to the north of Griffiths Prospecting Protection Area.

SN, 14th June 1873 - Advertisement by T.T. Biddulph allowing passage across his land to the Yalwal Diggings.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 25th April 1888 - Mechanics Cricket Club v, Yalwal at Nowra in which only one innings is played, the match is won by Yalwal. The Biddulphs play for Yalwal: R. Biddulph 35 runs, T.H. Biddulph 2 runs.

Shoalhaven News, 24th June 1893 - The Homeward Bound Dispute: Booker & party and Mason & party, were the former holders of the lease which, owing to non payment of rent, was forfeited on May 12th.

SN, 22nd July 1893 - Mr. Booker and Mr. Sheehan 9the Mining Registrar) are appointed by the Mining Warden to make an interim inspection of the Homeward Bound Mine on behalf of all the parties interested.

Shoalhaven Telegraph, 7th March 1894 - “Mr. Brown, of Wollongong, with his staff of hands and his plant for building the bridge over the Yarramunmun was camped on the north side of the flooded creek.....The first frame or set of piles were already driven’” Brown rigged up a flying fox across the flooded Yarramunmun Creek to enable people trapped on the Yalwal side to return to Nowra.
