The following reports was transcribed from The Brisbane Courier.
20th October 1865 :
“The schooner Spree [sic] has been wrecked at Kiama. Two of her crew were drowned.”
23rd October 1865 :
“WRECK OFF KIAMA. - Intelligence was received in town yesterday that the fore-and-aft schooner Spec, of 17 tons, was struck by a heavy squall one mile and a half off Black Head, near Gerringong, at noon on the 17th instant. The vessel heeled over, , and went down within five minutes. Captain J. Dawson, the master, and a seaman named George, a foreigner, were unfortunately drowned; but the other sailor on board, named Edward Ross, swam to Gerringong beach in a heavy sea, and was saved, reaching Mr. Kerwick’s station about 1 o’clock. he was much cut by the rocks, and quite naked. When he last saw Captain Dawson he was on the bow of the vessel as she went down. - S. M. Herald, Oct. 19.”
