The following report was transcribed from The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser, 8th September 1849 :

 

“The cutter Mermaid, 12 tons, Baxter, master and owner, during the heavy north-east gale on Wednesday night last, was driven ashore in the harbour of Jerringong [Gerringong], and became a total wreck. No lives were lost, and her cargo, consisting of cedar plank, was saved.”
