Evening Post, New Zealand, 1st June 1900 :
“Further news received of the erstwhile New Zealand trader Gleaner shows that the vessel had only just arrived at Borley Point [Bawley Point] from Sydney and was moored ready to start loading when a strong north-easter set in, during which she carried away the moorings and went ashore. The stem got wedged between two rocks, and the action of the sea soon rendered her a hopeless wreck. The vessel was insured for L800 in the National Insurance Company of New Zealand. The underwriters have decided to sell the wreck at auction.”
