The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser, 2nd March 1882 :
“COLLISION AT SEA - LOSS OF LIFE.- An unfortunate collision took place at sea early yesterday morning (says Monday’s Hearld), about six miles north of Beecroft Point, when the Kameruka steamer came in collision with the ketch Esther Maria, bound from Sydney to Jervis Bay. The ketch foundered almost instantly, and three of her hands succeeded in getting on board the steamer, but Charles Greenwood, the mate, was drowned, although a long search was made for him. We append the report of Captain Bishop of the Kameruka, which supplies particulars of the accident. He says : - The Kameruka (s.) left Eden at 8 a.m. 25th; called at Merimbula, Tathra, Bermagui, and Montague Island; passed Cape St. George at 11.40 p.m. At 1.30 a.m. on the 26th, when about six miles north of Beecroft Point, came in collision with the ketch Esther Maria, bound from Sydney to Jervis Bay. The ketch sank almost immediately. The steamer’s engines were stopped before the vessels collided. The master and three hands succeeded aboard the steamer, but unfortunately the mate, Charles Greenwood, was missing. The steamer’s boat was promptly lowered, and a careful search made for any signs of the missing man, but without success. The boat belonging to the ketch was picked up and taken on board, whilst the steamer kept cruising round the scene of the collision until 6.30 a.m., but the search proved abortive, and the vessel made for Sydney, arriving at the company’s wharf at 2.15 a.m. Had strong N.E. and northerly winds throughout.”
