The Shoalhaven News, 21st November 1868 :
“Total Wreck of the Ketch Chippewa.
“WE have received information of the total wreck of the ketch Chippewa, trading between this port and Sydney, which took place about ten o’clock on Thursday night last, at Crookhaven Heads. From the information we have received, it appears that the Chippewa, Stephens master, in endeavouring to make the heads, passed some distance to the southward, and finding this to be the case, the vessel was put about, but unfortunately on rounding the point, struck upon a rock, and almost immediately after went down in deep water. The crew happily took to the boats in time to save themselves, although one of the sailors had a very narrow escape from being drowned, as he experienced some difficulty in getting into the boat. Nothing was saved from the vessel, which on this trip happened to have a large quantity of goods on board for those who had sent their produce to market. The crew, with one paddle, sculled the boat to Greenwell Point, where they arrived in safety yesterday morning. We have not yet learned whether the vessel was insured or not.”
Daily Southern Cross (New Zealand), 6th March 1869 :
