“In February, 1805, Surveyor James Meehan extended his surveys southward from the Illawarra to the Shoalhaven River, portion of which he surveyed. He mentions that much of his measuring was performed with a perambulator or measuring wheel, and when this got out of order he used a chain. Some idea of the difficulties he encountered with his measuring wheel at Jervis Bay may be gleaned from the following entries : - ‘12th October, 1819: Think this distance in error, too much.’ ‘13th: Find my Perambulator will not perform; tried to put in order, but could not, having no means; . . . tried again and hope it will now perform.’ ‘18th October: The Perambulator is again out of order; use the chain.’ “
