The Sydney Mail, 13th September 1879 :
“The schooner Bertha, Captain Mahlow [Mahler], of Sydney, bound for Kiama, was wrecked this morning near Point Bass; all hands were saved. She is on the rocks, and will be a total wreck. There is another wreck near the Five Islands, supposed to be the Franze, both owned by Mr. F. W. Cook, Sydney. These vessels for some time past have been engaged in supplying bluestone metal for the government.
“The Bertha went on shore at half-past 5 o’clock this morning, driven in by a terrific gale from the east and north-east to the south-east. The weather was so thick that the points of the headlands were hardly visible. The sails of the vessel were ripped, and it was impossible to carry canvas. The captain made every effort to save his vessel, but she was driven into Point Bass on the south side of Shellharbour Point on to a bed of rock. The blacks, from the immediate camp, saved the lives of the captain and crew by conveying a line from the vessel to the shore. Mr. Fryer, who resides in the vicinity of the wreck, is now kindly accommodating the crew.”
