James Backhouse’s A Narrative of a Visit to the Australian Colonies was published by Hamilton Adams & Co., London, 1843. Probably the most cited work on the early years of the Illawarra and Shoalhaven, with good reason. A Quaker missionary and keen naturalist, much of his journey was undertaken on foot; he had a keen eye for observation and the descriptions that he leaves to us are both vivid and accurate.
